Arch 557 | Structural Principles in Architecture

ARCH 363 | Design Implementation III

Course Summary

ARCH 557 and ARCH 363 are advanced technology graduate and undergraduate courses designed for architecture students to provide an effective strategy for integrating advanced structural principles and their application in architectural design.

The courses incorporate a comprehensive four-module active-learning approach: 1. Manual calculations; 2. Computational structural analysis; 3. Physical models fabrication and load testing; and 4. Architectural design integration. Emphasis will be placed on developing strong skills in modeling complex structure systems and applying cutting-edge structural analysis tools, as well as reinforcing and acquiring a deep understanding of form-finding simulation and material performance through both in-class and lab activities.

As a proposal for an integrated technology and architecture design curricula, this paper describes the strategy, approach, assessment, and value of a more comprehensive and congruous curriculum that better prepares the next generation of architects.
